The two ships are in a “stalemate,” according to Taiwan’s coast guard.
Chinese state-controlled media reports that the Chinese ship is conducting a “law enforcement operation” and that the ship’s presence follows talks between Japan and the Philippines on drawing boundaries in the maritime area east of Taiwan.
China, which considers Taiwan part of its territory, says the talks are “illegal” and claims the legal right to sole control of the maritime area.
Taiwan has been de facto self-governing since the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949. Beijing has repeatedly threatened to retake the island by military means.
