The 27-year-old Slovenian - who has already won the Tour de France five times - crashed on the asphalt during the eighth stage of the race on Saturday.

According to his team, UAE, Pogacar suffered abrasions, a concussion, a fracture of a cervical vertebra and a displaced fracture of his left collarbone.

"He will need surgery on his collarbone, but the procedure is postponed due to the concussion," said Adrian Rotunno, the team's medical director, in a statement.

“Fortunately, there are no other serious injuries and no neurological complications,” Rotunno continues.

Spaniard Enric Mas took over the red leader's jersey, 71 seconds ahead of Austrian Felix Gall.
