Taco Bell Sales Fall 4% After Lettuce-Linked Illness Outbreak, Then Recover in September

This summer’s outbreak of illness linked to pre-cut lettuce hit Taco Bell’s sales hard. However, the fast-food chain has since recovered.

In July, more than 100 people were hospitalized in the United States after eating at the Tex-Mex chain. The cause was reportedly pre-chopped lettuce contaminated with the parasite cyclospora, which caused severe stomach pain and diarrhea among customers.

The fallout for the company is reflected in third-quarter sales, which fell by 4 percent compared with the same period in 2025. This was a larger drop than the market had expected, Bloomberg reports.

The chain has since tried to win customers back with various discount offers and launched advertising campaigns featuring, for example, American singer Olivia Rodrigo. Sales also recovered in September, the company reports.
