Anyone wanting to buy alcohol in Strömstad on Maundy Thursday will be met with closed doors. This is in response to requests from both the police and the municipality to keep intoxicated Norwegians away. This is reported by P4 Väst.
Maundy Thursday is a public holiday in Norway, and on the so-called "Rännaredag" (Runners' Day), party-loving Norwegians usually travel across the Norwegian border to Strömstad to celebrate.
Between 2012 and 2022, Systembolaget in Strömstad was closed on Maundy Thursday, according to TV4 Nyheterna, but in recent years it has been open. It will be closed again in 2026.
