Syria's newly appointed interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa visits Turkey for a meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The meeting on Tuesday will take place in Ankara, where the former Islamist rebel leader al-Sharaa is seeking political and economic support for the rebuilding of Syria.

This is al-Sharaa's second trip abroad since President Bashar al-Assad's regime was overthrown on December 8. On Monday, the Syrian leader was in Saudi Arabia for a meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Turkey and Saudi Arabia have both expressed support for Ahmed al-Sharaa's leadership, as have, among others, Qatar and Egypt.

The two leaders will discuss "joint efforts for economic recovery, sustainable stability and security", said Erdogan's spokesperson Fahrettin Altun ahead of the meeting.

Furthermore, there is a Turkish interest in having good contacts with al-Sharaa, as Turkey does not want to see Kurdish-led groups, such as the so-called SDF forces, gaining a foothold in northeastern Syria.
