Large quantities of seized narcotics have been burned by Syria's new authorities, according to security sources cited by the AFP news agency.

We found a large quantity of captagon, about a million tablets, says a source.

Captagon is a drug that the now ousted Assad regime lived high on – the illegal turnover was estimated to be larger than Syria's entire official economy.

The new Islamist government has spoken out critically about drugs, but experts have wondered if it will still fall for the great economic temptation that the black market represents.

Among the drug parties that were burned on Christmas Day were also cannabis and tramadol.
