The procedure is taking place in accordance with the constitutional declaration announced earlier this year. Syria's previous parliament was dissolved in connection with President Bashar al-Assad being overthrown by the Islamist movement Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in December last year.
The new legislative assembly, which will sit during a five-year transition period, will consist of 210 members. 140 of these will be appointed by local committees, while the remaining 70 are nominated directly by interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa.
The process has been met with harsh criticism from the opposition and civil society, which has condemned the fact that significant power ends up in the president's hands while the representation of the country's ethnic and religious minorities is described as inadequate.
The new parliament will, according to what has been communicated, be in effect until a permanent constitution has been drawn up and new elections have been held.
