The cousin was charged with "murder combined with torture and brutality... which are classified as crimes against humanity and war crimes," according to Judge Fakhr al-Din al-Aryan in the Damascus court.
Tuesday's verdict came a week after the ousted president was sentenced to death in absentia along with his brother. They were accused of crimes against humanity and war crimes during Syria's 14-year civil war, which has claimed the lives of half a million people.
Bashar al-Assad and his brother fled to Russia after rebels marched into Damascus in December 2024.
