"We have begun the first process of destruction since we were liberated from the previous regime," said Syria's UN Ambassador Ibrahim Olabi at a Security Council meeting on Thursday.
The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) stripped Syria of its voting rights in 2021 after it was determined that the then regime was behind sarin and chlorine gas attacks against the country's population during the civil war.
But after the fall of al-Assad, the new government, led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, has promised to cooperate with the OPCW and destroy the remaining stockpiles of chemical weapons.
"Our goal is to protect the Syrian people so that such weapons do not fall into the wrong hands," Olabi said.
