Syria's interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa stated on Friday that the country is negotiating with Israel on a security agreement that would mean Israel leaves the areas that the country occupied in December.

In connection with the fact that Islamist-led forces last year overthrew Syria's former president Bashar al-Assad, Israel sent troops to the UN-monitored buffer zone in the Golan Heights, which has separated forces from the two countries since 1973.

Now, negotiations are underway on a security agreement to return Israel to the situation before December 8, says al-Sharaa in an interview with the state television channel Alekhbariah.

It is unclear how Israel views the information.
