The controversial advertising campaign in which the "Euphoria" star poses naked with sports equipment has been criticised by several prominent female athletes.
“I really hate Sydney Sweeney’s new sports commercial so damn much,” wrote Tilly Kearns, Olympic silver medallist in water polo, on Instagram, and received support from several prominent female athletes.
Like American gymnast Gracie Kramer and Australian Olympic gold medallist in swimming Ariarne Titmus:
“I can’t describe how upset I am when I see this,” Titmus wrote on Instagram. “How can we live in a world where it’s still okay to make money off women’s bodies and sexualize women’s sports?”
British sprinter Amy Hunt hit out at Sweeney in an interview with the BBC after a race in the Ultimate Championship in Budapest this weekend.
Sydney Sweeney, this is what women's sports look like, Hunt said, looking into the camera.
Muscles, hard work, blood, sweat, tears.
Sweeney has joined Novig as a strategic partner and has become a co-owner of the company. In a statement about the advertisement last week, Sweeney said:
“The concept is simple: cut through the noise and put all the focus on sports. The campaign realises that idea with confidence, humour and a playful tone.”
Sweeney has previously stirred controversy with a jeans commercial for American Eagle and her underwear brand Syrn.
The latest follower loss represents less than one percent of Sweeney's 25.7 million followers.
