It was at 1-1 that Argentina's Leandro Paredes first received a yellow card from the referee after Breel Embolo went down.
The incident was reviewed by VAR under the new “mistaken identity” rule. Embolo ended up being cautioned instead - his second yellow card of the match, and the 29-year-old was sent off.
Something that should never have happened. According to football's international governing body Ifab, the "mistaken identity" rule cannot be used in such situations.
Ifab states in a statement that the rule may be applied to similar situations in the future, but only after an ongoing review of the VAR regulations has been completed.
Argentina won the quarter-final 3-1 after extra time.
