Just minutes after Dan Ndoye equalised for Switzerland in the second half, referee Joao Pedro Pinheiro came under fire. After a close call between Argentina's Leandro Paredes and Switzerland's Breel Embolo, the Argentine was shown a yellow card.
But after a VAR review, the decision was reversed. Under the new "mistaken identity" rule, Embolo was instead cautioned for fouling, which was the striker's second yellow card and he was sent off.
"We are being punished because of a rule that I think is completely unacceptable. It is very painful that we are going out like that," says Switzerland's Murat Yakin.
Argentina won the match 3–1 and will face England in the quarter-finals.
