The Swedish-Ethiopian cardiologist Fikru Maru has passed away, 74 years old.
Maru opened a heart hospital in Ethiopia in 2006 and developed the care for heart diseases in the country.
"His efforts have left an indelible mark on healthcare in Ethiopia and beyond its borders", writes on Facebook.
Maru was imprisoned in Ethiopia between 2013 and 2018, accused of, among other things, bribery. The prison sentence was criticized by several human rights organizations, and his case received extensive attention in Swedish media.
