After nine straight World Cup gold medals, things came to a head for Sweden's women's floorball team. The blue-yellow team was crushed by Switzerland in the World Cup semi-finals.

Ever since the gold medal in 2007, Sweden has been on the women's floorball throne and has won world championship after world championship.

That's why it was shocking how Sweden collapsed so completely in Saturday night's World Cup semi-final against Switzerland in Ostrava.

Switzerland won 6–3 and the overrun began after just under four minutes when Seraina Fitzi, who lives in Endre, Gotland, sent in a hard shot to the far post for 1–0.

Clubmate Chiara Gredig shot 2–0, even looser from the halfway line, before Fitzi made it 3–0 on a lightning Swiss counterattack after just over 15 minutes.

Ellen Rasmussen's goal gave Sweden some hope late in the first period, but the reply came quickly when Switzerland increased the lead to 4–1 just over a minute later.

Switzerland moved to 6–1 and it was only in the final minutes, when Sweden took out the goalkeeper, that they managed to improve the losing figures.

I think we only have ourselves to blame, we are not reaching a good level, says a tearful Rasmussen to SVT.

Then we create an incredible amount and they have (Lara) Heini in goal who saves everything today.

Blue and yellow, who are playing their first World Cup with Linn Lundström as national team captain, will face Finland in Sunday's bronze medal match.

Disappointment. A little frustration, Lundström tells SVT about his feelings after the loss.

Finland, who have faced Sweden in seven of the last nine World Cup finals, also unexpectedly fell in their semi-final. It was 0–1 to the host nation Czech Republic, who are now playing in the Women's World Cup final for the first time.

Michaela Kubeckova, with Kalmarsund as her club address, decided with only 1.19 left in the semi-final.
