Emil Krafth has undergone surgery and will be out for the rest of the season, Newcastle coach Eddie Howe announced.

"Emil has had knee surgery so I think the season is most likely over for him, which is a really tough decision for us," Howe said at a press conference on Tuesday.

"The problem arose during a national team training camp. We hoped he would come back and be okay, but it turned out recently in training that he was not up to par and that surgery was needed."

This means Krafth will probably not be selected for Sweden's World Cup playoff. Sweden play against Ukraine on March 26; if they win, they will face Poland or Albania on March 31.
