Swedish Summer Roadworks to Increase with New Funding

With more money, more roadworks will be done. A billion kronor addition to the Swedish Transport Administration will be noticeable already this summer. But in normal cases, there will be no extremely long queues, says Annika Canaki at the Swedish Transport Administration.

When the government last autumn presented its infrastructure proposal for 2026–2037, there was, among other things, a significant increase in allocations for road maintenance.

It will start already this summer to be implemented in, for example, more paving work.

We have seen for many years that the road network has deteriorated and that we need more funds. But now there will be a gradual increase in allocations, says Annika Canaki, who is head of department at the Swedish Transport Administration.

It's really fun, of course. At the same time, road users will notice that there will be more and more roadworks over the next few years.

Fewer lanes

Since asphalt work is temperature-dependent, many of the measures are carried out during the summer months. This applies, for example, to various sections along the E4 this year.

At the same time, maintenance is underway on the High Coast Bridge until October, while on the E6 and E20 in Halland, guardrails are being replaced gradually.

It's very difficult to point out individual projects. Some of the ones we mentioned are projects that are ongoing for a slightly longer period, such as bridge repairs, says Annika Canaki.

But what may disturb traffic the most is the paving work, where we often have to temporarily reduce the number of lanes. But often they only go on for a day or two before they move on.

"Keep your distance"

Those who travel a little longer distances by car this summer will probably come across one or two roadworks, according to Annika Canaki. She doesn't think you should plan your route according to the constructions, though.

Drive the main roads. It's the safest in terms of traffic, to drive on our motorways or median-separated roads, she says.

But please be out in good time and keep your distance both to those who work on the roads and to other cars.

Moreover, she continues, it's essential to keep the purpose of the roadworks in mind.

Many have complained a lot about our bad roads. But if we are going to make them better, it will also be noticeable, she says.

Facts: Larger roadworks in summer

(TT) Here are some larger roadworks that the Swedish Transport Administration has pointed out before the summer.

E4: among other things, paving work on various sections from Haparanda to Helsingborg.

Additionally, maintenance of the E4 is already underway on the High Coast Bridge, where one lane is alternately closed. Ongoing until October.

Essingeleden, E4/E20 through Stockholm: paving work, among other things, between Västberga and Norrtull. Mainly at night, all summer.

E22 Kristianstad, among other things: bridges over the Helge River are being replaced. Not completed this year.

E6 Halland and on E20: replacement of guardrails. Preliminarily completed in June, otherwise after the holiday.

Stockholm and Gothenburg: many paving jobs in and around the cities, mainly at night.
