With 20 traffic deaths per million inhabitants, Swedish roads remain the safest in the EU, ahead of Denmark at 23 and Estonia at 31, new aggregated statistics from Eurostat show.
Estonia is reporting the greatest progress with a 38 percent reduction in the number of road deaths between 2024 and 2025.
A total of 19,400 people died on EU roads in 2025, or 43 per million inhabitants. Per capita, traffic is most dangerous in Bulgaria, with 71 deaths per million, ahead of Romania at 68 and Croatia at 67.
