A total of 9,087 people were admitted to institutions in October 2025. This is 11 percent more than at the same time in 2024 and 115 percent more than in 2016.
"The increase is mainly explained by the tougher penalties that have been implemented in recent years," says Charlotta Lindström, a statistician at Brå, in a press release.
The number of people sentenced to prison terms longer than four years has also risen sharply, from 318 people in 2016 to 1,331 people in 2025.
