The home team took the lead after barely four minutes when Filip Forsberg assisted Jonathan Marchessault. Just over ten minutes later, Bryan Rust equalized via Rickard Rakell. But Nashville bounced back quickly and made sure to take the lead before the first period was over.

In the beginning of the second, Steven Stamkos then extended the lead to 3–1 after assists from both Forsberg and Gustav Nyquist. Then it was Pittsburgh's turn to come back, first via a Erik Karlsson-assisted goal from point king Sidney Crosby and then Rakell's goal.

In the third period, Erik Karlsson arranged his second point in the match when he shot 4–4 with a precision shot. In overtime, it then took just over a minute before Bryan Rust found the net for the second time in the match and gave the extra points to the visitors.
