Sweden’s Karlsson and Källberg Lose European Championship Doubles Final to Lebrun Brothers

Table tennis stars Kristian Karlsson and Anton Källberg lost the European Championship doubles final in Ljubljana. They were just four points away from gold. “It feels very sad that it didn’t work out,” Anton Källberg tells SVT.

The French star brothers Alexis and Félix Lebrun won 3–2.

The blue-and-yellow duo took the first set convincingly, 11–5, but the Lebrun brothers stepped up and won the second set 11–5 and the third 11–8.

We served and returned very well in the first set, and managed to put pressure on them in the duels. They didn't really find their rhythm at the beginning - but then the second set went just as quickly in the other direction, says Källberg.

Took the lead in the fifth

The Swedes managed to tie the match at 2–2, and the deciding set was a thriller.

Huge disappointment, of course. It's tough when we play such good doubles and it's not enough all the way, says Kristian Karlsson.

The Swedes had their sights set on gold when they took a 3–0 lead in the fifth set and were just four points away from gold at 7–5. But after a couple of blue-and-yellow mistakes, the French caught up and eventually won 11–8.

3–0 after two rock-hard attacks by Anton, then it becomes 7–5 and then it goes fast. They play with incredible pace and momentum and force me to make some bad decisions at the end that I'm a little upset about, Karlsson tells SVT.

The Nightmare Alexis Lebrun

Alexis Lebrun also defeated Karlsson in mixed doubles and men's singles.

"Of course, you can laugh about it a little later, maybe, that he beats me in all three. But he is one of Europe's best players in all classes, and I challenge him in all three. But I will see myself defeated in this championship," says Karlsson.

The Swedish pair will take home silver medals after the loss.

We have played well from start to finish. We have fought, fought and shown that we are a good doubles pair that is difficult to beat. It sucks now that we lost the final, but a silver is still nice, says Anton Källberg to SVT.
