If everyone lived the way we do in Sweden, resources from four continents would be required every year, according to calculations by the organization Global Footprint Network. The pattern is repeated in other high-income countries.
It also measures how the world's population actually lives, and the date when the Earth's annual supply of resources is used up has in recent years fallen around the turn of July to August. Last year it fell on July 24.
The ecological footprint of Swedes is one of the world's largest per capita.
However, Sweden has a large biological capacity. From a national perspective, Sweden is one of the relatively few countries whose biocapacity clearly exceeds its ecological footprint.
