The Olympics haven't even started, but there are already reports of stomach flu. Finland, which shares a house with the Swedish team in the Olympic village, has been affected. "There is always concern," says Fredrik Joulamo, sports director at the Swedish Olympic Committee (SOK) and Swedish team manager.

According to reports, the stomach illness has also spread to parts of the French and American squads, but the two nations have not officially confirmed any cases.

“Then there are indications that it is moving in some mountain cluster as well,” says Joulamo at a press conference in Milan.

Sweden and Finland share a building in the Olympic Village in Milan. It is mainly the Tre Kronor women who are at risk as it is the Finnish women's hockey team that has been affected by four cases of stomach illness.

“They have the floor below us and we share laundry facilities and dining rooms and the like. First of all, we have contacted Finland's squad leader to hear and settle on how they move around the building, which stairwells and elevators they use,” says Joulamo.

Several Finnish players are clubmates with Swedish players in the SDHL, and Swedish team captain Anna Kjellbin, Toronto, is engaged to Ronja Savolainen on the Finnish team.

“She doesn't say much about this, but she seems to have coped and that's nice. When we're on the road like this, we don't see each other much; if we meet we say hello, but it's no more than when I meet other players,” says Kjellbin.

The Swedish team leadership is emphasizing hygiene for the players.

“We have no indications in the Swedish squad yet, but we are extra careful and doing everything we can. We are keeping to ourselves a little more and using hand sanitizer and washing our hands a lot.”
