When the Swedish national team was selected for the European Championship in basketball, Jonas Jerebko was missing – whose suspension from the national team was lifted earlier in the spring.
We have been in contact with Jonas and finally chosen to move on with other players. We have talked to Jonas about it this week. He took the message as all players who did not get to join and is disappointed of course. He thought he could help us. So it was a fairly normal reaction, says national team coach Mikko Riipinen.
NBA stars Pelle Larsson, Miami Heat and Bobi Klintman, Detroit Pistons are both selected. Riipinen is satisfied with the squad that has been selected.
We are happy with this squad and the players we have, what properties we have got together in the squad. We have several players who have been with us before and have good experience and then we have the new additions with good energy with Pelle (Larsson) and Bobi (Klintman).
Jerebko was suspended from national team play since he signed with CSKA Moscow in March 2022, some month after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The European Championship in basketball is played between August 27 and September 14 and Sweden will play their group stage matches in Tampere, Finland. Sweden has Germany, Finland, Great Britain, Lithuania and Montenegro in their group.
It feels fantastic to be back in the European Championship and enormously fun to start by taking on our "archenemy" Finland in the premiere match, says sports manager Lars Johansson.
