His son Simon J. Berger wrote to TT that he died on Friday "surrounded by his large family and much love."
Bengt Berger was a percussionist and was known as one of the most distinctive figures in Swedish jazz. He drew much inspiration from Ghana and India for his music and was active in many groups over the years.
Berger received a number of awards. In 2011, he received both Sveriges Radio P2's honorary award Guldkatten and the Jan Johansson scholarship.
In 2022, he was awarded the Royal Swedish Academy of Music's highest award, the Medal for the Promotion of Musical Art, for his "significant work as a percussionist and musical bridge builder".
Bengt Berger was 83.
