This is shown by new statistics from the Swedish Agency for Cultural Analysis. After the drop during the pandemic, museum visits have increased for several years, but that trend has now reversed.
Of the museums' total revenue in 2025, 63 percent came from public grants or allocations, while 37 percent came from other sources. This means that the share of funding from non-public sources has decreased slightly, from 39 percent to 37 percent.
However, the number of exhibitions and public activities increased slightly at the large museums.
"The overall impression is that the situation in the museum sector looks stable," says statistician Erik Vestin in a press release.
