Swede shot in Patong, Phuket, Thailand - one arrested

A 25-year-old man was shot to death in Patong, Phuket, Thailand, on Friday. According to several media outlets, he was a Swedish citizen linked to gang-related crime. A man has been arrested.

Thai media report that the man was shot while cleaning a motorcycle outside a hotel. The suspected shooter was wearing a motorcycle helmet and was caught on surveillance camera fleeing the scene.

Now Thai media are reporting that a man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of murder near Phuket airport. According to the Bangkok Post, police suspect that the man, who is said to be from South America, was hired abroad to carry out the shooting.

In Thai media, the dead man is described as coming from Iraq, but according to information provided to Expressen, SVT and DN, he is also a Swedish citizen and has ties to criminal gangs.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been informed that a Swedish man has been shot in Thailand. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the embassy in Bangkok are investigating the information. Due to consular confidentiality, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has no other information to provide," the Ministry's press service wrote in an email to TT on Sunday.
