The incident occurred on Monday afternoon in what was described as difficult terrain. As the man tried to descend towards a stream, he fell down a steep mountainside.
Another person, a Vienna resident, was on the hike. He was also injured when he tried to get down to help his friend, but managed to call for help.
Shortly before dusk, the men were picked up and taken to hospital. Police and several rescue organizations took part in the operation, which was hampered by strong winds.
