Swedish Justice Minister: System Fails to Protect Women

The Swedish judicial system does not protect women sufficiently, says Sweden's Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer. The comment comes after the so-called Nytorgsman was convicted of a rape that occurred while he was conditionally released.

Gunnar Strömmer does not want to comment on individual cases, and Thursday's verdict in Lund District Court may be appealed, the Minister of Justice begins his comment in an email to TT.

"But on a general level, I can note that our system today does not protect citizens and society from dangerous repeat offenders, and above all - does not sufficiently protect women from dangerous men", he continues.

The Government has proposed that conditional release should be granted at the earliest after three-quarters of the sentence and that those who risk relapsing into serious crime may have their conditional release postponed.

Those who are convicted of several serious sexual offenses should also be able to be sentenced to life imprisonment, according to Strömmer.
