Swedish Judiciary Sees Success in Gang Leader's Arrest Abroad

Even if the gang leader Ismail Abdo is not arrested for the crimes he is suspected of in Sweden, it is a success for the Swedish judicial system, according to Gunnar Appelgren, police officer and expert on gang crime. The important thing is that he is arrested, prosecuted and prevented from continuing to commit crimes, he says.

If they in Turkey have finally managed to apprehend the wanted gang leader Ismail Abdo through international contacts, it is great, since such types of criminals instigate serious crimes in Sweden, emphasizes Gunnar Appelgren.

We know that he is abroad and instigates a number of crimes. It would be good for the judicial system if he is apprehended, he says.

Even if Abdo is now only apprehended for crimes committed in Turkey, it is positive, reasons Gunnar Appelgren.

Then the effect can still be that he is prevented from instigating crimes in Sweden and is convicted of crimes he has committed in Turkey. It can be an effective way to get him to keep away, he says.

Ismail Abdo is a Turkish citizen and will therefore probably not be extradited to Sweden, states Gunnar Appelgren. This is also confirmed by the Prosecution Authority.

But there may be independent preliminary investigations in Turkey that put a stop to his criminal activity. In that case, it will be a bonus for the Swedish judicial system, he says.

Even previously, the fact that Ismail Abdo was a Turkish citizen has meant that it is not possible to get him extradited to Sweden, according to public prosecutor Daniel Jonsson.
