The cultivation of Swedish hemp has doubled compared to last year and has now reached a record level, reports P4 Malmöhus.

Industrial hemp is grown this year on 1,800 hectares, most of which in Skåne, shows preliminary statistics from the Board of Agriculture. Ten years ago, Swedish hemp cultivation only covered 71 hectares.

Kerstin Wahlquist at Hushållningssällskapet tells the radio that she believes in a continued increase.

Cultivation of hemp became legal in 2003, but it only applies to industrial hemp, which has a very low level of THC, the active substance in cannabis.

Industrial hemp can be used, among other things, in insulation materials and in textiles.
