The government is proposing abolishing the notification requirement for receiving parental benefit, reports Sveriges Radio's Ekot.

This is an unnecessary administrative task. It costs money for the authority to administer, and it means another thing for a hard-working parent to think about, says Minister of Social Insurance Anna Tenje (M) on the radio.

According to the current rules, those who want to take parental leave must first notify the Swedish Social Insurance Agency and then apply for parental benefit. From 1 July this year, it will be sufficient to apply for parental benefit directly without notification, according to the government's proposal.

According to Tenje, abolishing the requirement does not risk leading to increased cheating.

We see that this doesn't really serve any purpose, she says.
