The Swedish game was one of four that won more than one prize. The gala's big winner was otherwise "Astro bot", which took home four categories, including the class of the year's game.

The nominations for the gala were made by 100 media companies and other influencers, who then together with the general public elected the winners.

"Helldivers 2" was developed in Sweden by Arrowhead and has sold 12 million copies since its launch in February this year. This has kept the company busy and the staff has grown by 30 employees to 145 since the launch.

"Magical atmosphere"

The prize for best ongoing game was presented by Snoop Dogg and his son Cordell Broadus and was received by Arrowhead's Elina Nitsan and Mikael Eriksson.

Wow, we didn't expect this. I'm very honored to receive this prize for the fantastic gang in Stockholm who made this possible, said Mikael Eriksson in an emotional speech, according to videogamer.com.

Arrowhead's product manager Maria Cornelius tells TT that the atmosphere in the office is magical.

"This is a fantastic confirmation of our team's hard work and passion for creating co-op experiences that bring people together", she writes in an email to TT.

Released update

During the gala, Arrowhead also released a comprehensive update of "Helldivers 2" called "Omens of tyranny", where a third race to fight against is introduced – the illuminati faction with mental powers. Cornelius describes the surprising release as a way "to create moments that players never forget":

"It's our tribute to them – for all the laughter, all the shouts, all the failed and successful missions they've shared with their friends. That's what makes our work worth it.

The other nominated Swedish games at the gala – "Star wars outlaws" with three winning chances and "Lorelei and the laser eyes" with one – went without a prize.

Corrected version: In an earlier version, there was an error about the number of employees at Arrowhead.

Winners in selection:

Game of the year: "Astro bot"

Best game direction: "Astro bot"

Best narrative: "Methaphor: Refantazio"

Best music: "Final fantasy VII rebirth"

Best indie game: "Balatro"

Best action game: "Call of duty: Black ops 6"

The Game Awards is a gala that has annually awarded outstanding games and individuals in the gaming world since 2014.

This year's edition of The Game Awards was broadcast on the night of December 13 from Los Angeles with Geoff Keighley as host.
