Swedish films accounted for 11.8 percent of total cinema attendance in Sweden in 2025. This is a decline from 20 percent the year before, reports Kulturnytt on Swedish Radio.
In total, cinema attendance for all films decreased by 5.5 percent compared to the previous year.
A natural explanation for why fewer people watched Swedish films is that fewer Swedish films had a wide release, according to Peter Fornstam, chairman of the Cinema Owners' Association.
So it wasn't that people didn't go to see Swedish films, but there were no Swedish films to watch, he tells SR.
The Norwegian film "Sentimental Value," with Stellan Skarsgård in one of the roles, did well and was seen by 115,000 people.
