Swedish Film Institute Calls for Decision on New Film Heritage Centre Next Year

A decision on a new film heritage centre is needed as early as next year, the Swedish Film Institute says in a report to the government.

From 2032, there will be a shortage of secure storage space for film and moving images, says Mathias Rosengren, head of film heritage at the Swedish Film Institute, on Kulturnytt on Sveriges Radio.

“The work must begin quite soon,” he tells Kulturnytt.

A previous film inquiry found that film heritage is currently fragmented among many organisations. The government therefore commissioned the Swedish Film Institute to estimate the cost of a new, unified film heritage centre.

“Even though it is not particularly expensive, money still needs to be allocated for it, and I would say that this is almost all that is missing,” Rosengren tells Kulturnytt.
