According to the Swedish Armed Forces, JAS 39 Gripen planes encountered a Russian Kilo-class submarine in the Kattegat on Friday as it was heading into the Baltic Sea.

In cooperation with allies, the Swedish Armed Forces are monitoring the submarine's continued journey.

"This is our backyard and we have good control of the Baltic Sea. For us it's about marking presence, we see what's happening and have control of the situation," Jonas Beltrame-Linné, a press officer at the Swedish Armed Forces, told GP.

He also said that the submarine is in international waters and has not violated Swedish territory.

According to a press release, the operation is "part of our routine operations that maintain the Swedish Armed Forces' good situational awareness in our immediate area and ensure Swedish and allied territorial integrity."
