Swedish Electric Boat Maker Candela Expands Production to USA

While many companies are worried about tariffs on imported goods to the USA, the Swedish electric boat manufacturer Candela is establishing production there. The focus is on states that – despite the president's opposition – are investing in green support.

There are states that will electrify their fleets, says Mikael Mahlberg at Candela.

The company plans to establish production of electric ferries in the USA next year, with the course set for coastal states.

The country's import duties are not something that will derail the plans. Nor is the fact that Donald Trump has quickly stopped payments from the former President Joe Biden's major initiative IRA (Inflation Reduction Act), subsidies that have benefited companies in renewable energy.

"There are incentives"

The country's 50 states have a great deal of independence and only obey federal laws in certain matters.

There are states that will electrify their fleets and then there are incentives to buy boats. The regions that are closest to the coast, such as New York, Seattle, and San Francisco, are often more willing to subsidize renewable energy, says communications manager Mikael Mahlberg.

Importing from Europe

The new tariff wall that Trump is now building around the country will not hurt particularly, according to Mikael Mahlberg.

While many American car manufacturers and boat companies in the USA must import parts from Asia, we will import parts from Europe, he says.

Something that thus gives a milder tariff blow than the one that import goods from China risk being hit by.

The electric boat manufacturer, which also produces leisure boats and exports to the USA, does not fear that price increases for American customers will be decisive.

When it comes to leisure boats, our customers are not price-sensitive. A tariff of 15 percent does not stop them, says Mikael Mahlberg.

Swedish electric boat manufacturer Candela is also located in India, Saudi Arabia, and Germany and has also operated an emission-free commuter ferry in a pilot project in Stockholm's public transport. The same ferry model will now also be tested in the Gothenburg area.

In the beginning of next year, a report on the Stockholm project will be presented, which will be the basis for the region's decision on whether the electric ferry will become a permanent alternative for the capital's commuters.

Around 1,500-1,600 Swedish companies have established themselves in the USA, according to information from Business Sweden. They have a total of around 300,000 employees in the USA.

The majority of the companies are relatively small, with between 10 and 100 employees, while the majority of jobs come from large companies.

This can include companies in the steel industry, subcontractors in engineering and IT software, and health and medical care.
