A number of alleviations for sport shooters and hunters are proposed in new firearms legislation – changes that cannot be implemented without risks, believes the Crime Prevention Council (Brå). It may mean an increased risk of firearm thefts, says Jonas Trolle, Director-General at Brå.

The Government and The Sweden Democrats propose, among other things, that the gun cabinet – how many hunting weapons a person may own – be expanded from four to eight weapons.

It is clear that the more weapons that are in private individuals' possession, the higher the risk may become for theft, even if they are legal weapons, says Trolle.

It will also become easier to store weapons in a place other than the home, such as a summer cottage – Trolle also believes that this may imply an increased risk of theft.

There are some challenges with this and we emphasized in our statement how important it is that the police authority follows it up very carefully.
