The Swedish citizenship test is being delayed by one year. The government now expects it to be introduced in October 2027.

"More time is needed to develop and introduce a citizenship test in Swedish," the government says in a press release.

The Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) was commissioned last year to conduct a preliminary study on a citizenship test in social studies and Swedish. However, Stockholm University, which was to assist the UHR, has said it will not have time to develop a Swedish-language test within the specified timeframe. The government is therefore extending the assignment.

"By adjusting the assignment, we are making it easier for Stockholm University to produce a high-quality test," says Minister of Upper Secondary Education, Higher Education and Research Lotta Edholm (L).

However, the social studies section of the citizenship test may be introduced as planned.
