Second straight win in João Pessoa came when the Argentine brother duo Nicolas and Tomas Capogrosso, ranked three in the world, were defeated in Thursday's group final with 2–1 in sets.

Thus, Hölting Nilsson/Andersson avoid the more complicated path through the playoffs. The Swedes go directly to the "round of 12", the step before the quarterfinals, instead of having to play another elimination match first.

Hölting Nilsson/Andersson won the first set and also had match balls in the second, which they eventually lost. It was still resolved in the deciding set, winning 15–12 after Hölting Nilsson decided with a couple of powerful blocks.

Olympic Games gold medalists David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig have the same situation as their countrymen. Overnight to Friday, they also play a group final, against the Brazilian pair George/Saymon.
