Recently, the magazine The Atlantic reported that Meta used a notorious "shadow library", "Libgen", to train AI models. Swedish authors are among those affected.
In an open letter published in Aftonbladet, 53 children's and young adult book authors urge Culture Minister Parisa Liljestrand (The Moderate Party) to take action.
The letter writers request that the Culture Minister contacts Meta and represents their case.
"We authors have neither legal nor economic resources to defend ourselves alone against a giant like Meta", they write.
In a comment to Dagens Nyheter, Culture Minister Parisa Liljestrand (The Moderate Party) writes:
"I understand the frustration of copyright holders, and think that Meta's actions are unacceptable. Therefore, I will invite Meta and representatives of rights holders to clarify the situation in the near future".
Meta also comments on the criticism.
"We respect third-party copyrights and believe that our use of information to train AI is in compliance with applicable law", a spokesperson for the company writes to DN.
