In September 2025, Västernorrland was hit by extensive flooding. The heavy downpour led to several serious accidents, including a fatal traffic accident, and caused major problems for rail transport when two trains derailed.
The Swedish Accident Investigation Board investigated the incident and found that the Swedish Transport Administration had failed to maintain the safety level required to prevent serious accidents. Decisions on traffic restrictions were not made in time, and weather forecasts and damage reports were not used to assess the risks.
In the report, the Swedish Accident Investigation Board recommends that the relevant authorities and the government take measures to better cope with future extreme weather.
