The EU Parliament calls for safe and legal abortion for all, in a resolution pushed through by Swedish Abir al-Sahlani (C).

Parliament now calls on the European Commission to arrange a voluntary system, with financial support from the EU, that would enable everyone to have access to safe and legal abortion, regardless of the national legislation of the Member States on the matter.

The non-binding resolution, which is based on the citizens' initiative My vote, my choice, was voted through with 358 yes votes, 202 no votes and 79 abstentions. All Swedes voted yes, except for the SD, which voted no.

"A great victory for all women in Europe. The EU has finally shown that sexual and reproductive health care is a fundamental human right," said al-Sahlani in a press release from the EU Parliament.

The European Commission now has until the beginning of March to announce how it intends to act.
