Parliament now calls on the European Commission to arrange a voluntary system, with financial support from the EU, that would enable everyone to have access to safe and legal abortion, regardless of the national legislation of the Member States on the matter.
The non-binding resolution, based on the citizens' initiative My Voice, My Choice, was voted through with 358 votes in favor, 202 against and 79 abstentions.
"A great victory for all women in Europe. The EU has finally shown that sexual and reproductive health care is a fundamental human right," said al-Sahlani in a press release from the EU Parliament.
The European Commission now has until the beginning of March to announce how it intends to act.
