With the victory, New Jersey has now won four games in a row.

In the second period, Swede Jesper Boqvist extended the team's lead with a wrist shot to make it 3–0. Fellow countryman Jesper Bratt helped set up the final goal, scored by Jack Hughes just over 13 minutes into the third period to make it 5–1.

New Jersey goalie Connor Hellebuyck made his debut for the team during the game, making 17 saves.

"It was a lot of fun. I think the guys in front of me played a perfect game for me to get acclimated," he said after the game, according to nhl.com.

The loss ended Dallas' winning streak. Dallas had won its previous five games, two of them in regulation time.

"It's clearly our worst game of the season," Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan says.

Corrected: An earlier version of the text gave an incorrect figure for the number of saves Hellebuyck made.
