It is also a slight decrease compared to 2023, show new figures from the Environmental Protection Agency.

The use of the thicker plastic bags in clothing stores is also at record low levels: eight million pieces in 2022, which is the lowest figure since the Environmental Protection Agency began publishing its statistics in 2017.

The decrease means that Sweden more than meets the EU's goal of reducing consumption to 40 pieces per person by 2025.

The figures have not yet been affected by the tax on plastic carrier bags being abolished in November 2024.
