+ How the Nations League and the European Championship qualifiers are connected

Even if it is not possible to reach the European Championship through the Nations League, the results are important.

Because the better you perform in the Nations League, the better seeding you get in the draw for the European Championship qualifiers.

In addition, there is a backdoor to the playoff game for the European Championship for the best Nations League teams that did not manage to qualify directly for the European Championship. Similar to the path that Sweden took to the World Cup.

+ When will it be clear who Sweden will face in the European Championship qualifiers?

The qualifying draw will take place on December 6 in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

+ How the European Championship qualifiers work

54 nations are divided into twelve groups and compete for 24 European Championship places. The group winners and the eight best group runners-up go directly to the European Championship. Two places are also reserved for the two host nations that do not qualify as group winners or best group runners-up.

Then the worst group runners-up and the best ranked teams from the Nations League, who have not managed to secure a direct place in the European Championship, will compete for the final places.

The first matches will be played in March 2027.

+ Playoff and host nations' qualifying participation

New for the championship is that the host nations, England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, are participating in the qualifiers and two of them are therefore at risk of missing their home European Championships.

Depending on how they fare, the playoff format could change. If both of the reserved host nation spots are used, eight teams will compete for two European Championship spots. If only one of the spots is used, twelve teams will compete for three spots, and if neither of the host nation spots is used, eight teams will compete for four spots in doubles.

+ Then the European Championship will be decided

June 9–July 9, 2028. The opening match will be played at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff and the final at Wembley in London.
