William Thoresson from Gothenburg was not one of the favorites for the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, but surprisingly won the individual program. He was 20 years old at the time and worked as a pharmacy assistant.
The Olympic gold medal remains Sweden's only individual Olympic gold in gymnastics, and Thoresson followed it up with a silver in Melbourne in 1956.
He was inducted into the Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 2001.
William Thoresson died after a period of illness.
