"By developing from a traditional museum to a technical cultural center with generous opening hours, innovative formats, and an immersive 3D-dome, the museum has opened up to new target groups", writes the jury in its motivation.
The Technical Museum was founded in 1923, and the experience arena Wisdome – where visitors can, with the help of 3D technology, for example, be taken on visually advanced "visits" to space – was inaugurated in 2023.
The award, which is presented by Sveriges Museer and the Swedish International Council of Museums, ICOM, aims to highlight museums that have distinguished themselves through innovative thinking and community-based activities.
The Technical Museum competed with Västmanland County Museum in Västerås and Gustavianum in Uppsala for the prize. The announcement was made during Sveriges Museer's annual meeting in Jönköping.
