“Absolutely incredible, it feels absolutely wonderful and I am so happy with how we played this match,” Isabella Wranå said on SVT’s broadcast after winning her first championship gold with the team.
It was the first time Team Wranå had reached a championship final, and they claimed the top title straight away. There will be no big celebration. Immediately after the European Championship, a Grand Slam tournament awaits in Alberta, Canada.
“We are leaving for Canada tomorrow morning at 6 am. We will get some sleep on the plane and hopefully also have a good competition there,” Isabella Wranå said.
Went undefeated
The women went undefeated at the European Championship in the Czech Republic, and in the final they impressed with the same confidence and precision they had shown throughout the tournament.
After scoring a point in the second end, the Swedes were able to put pressure on the Swiss and take the lead. When Wranå finished the sixth end with a perfect draw, they scored three points and the match was practically decided. After giving up another point in the seventh, Switzerland conceded.
“The tactic was to keep the pressure on and play offensively in the ends where Switzerland had the last stone,” Wranå said afterwards.
“We had a little trouble in the first end, but throughout the match we were in the driver’s seat. I am so incredibly proud of the girls; they made my job very easy today as the last stone player,” she told SVT.
Olympic gold last winter
Isabella Wranå made her breakthrough last winter when she and her brother Rasmus Wranå won Olympic gold in mixed doubles in Cortina. The siblings also won World Championship gold in 2024.
In March, she and the rest of Team Wranå - Linda Stenlund, Maria Larsson, Almida de Val and Moa Dryburgh - won bronze on their World Championship debut in Calgary.
The European Championship gold is Sweden’s second in a row in the women’s competition. Last year, Team Anna Hasselborg won in Finland, but the Winter Olympic gold medallists opted out of the Swedish European Championship qualification in September. Team Wranå secured the European Championship spot with a qualifying victory over Team Molly Mabergs.
