Stefan Thomson takes over as head coach of the Canadian men's and women's national teams.

“Stefan is one of the most accomplished and respected high-performance coaches in international cross-country skiing,” said Beckie Scott, CEO of the Canadian Ski Association, in a statement on its website.

The 52-year-old coached the Swedish women for eight years before quitting after last season, when he led the women to ten medals at the Olympics in Milan and Cortina and a victory in the World Cup Nations Cup.

In Canada, the reality is different. Last season, the best Canadian woman finished 30th overall in the World Cup, while the best male skier was 37th.
